What It Really Means to Become a Habitat Homeowner

When you hear the words “Habitat for Humanity,” you might picture volunteers picking up hammers, building walls, or working together to construct a home. While that is certainly part of what we do, the story of a Habitat home is about so much more than construction.

It’s about allowing a local family to build a future.

At Old Colony Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home. A stable home provides more than four walls and a roof. It provides security, stability, and a foundation where families can grow, thrive, and create lasting memories.

..But what does it actually mean to become a Habitat homeowner?

Habitat Homes Aren’t Simply Given Away

One of the biggest misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity is that we simply give families a house. The reality is much more meaningful than that.

Habitat homeowners purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage and become homeowners just like anyone else. They take on the responsibility of homeownership while working alongside Habitat throughout the process. Our goal isn’t simply to provide a house; it’s to help make affordable homeownership possible for families who may otherwise struggle to achieve it.

Finding the Right Family

Becoming a Habitat Partner Family begins with an application.

Families who are interested in partnering with Old Colony Habitat for Humanity must meet our program’s eligibility requirements, which include demonstrating a need for affordable housing, meeting income guidelines, and showing a willingness and ability to partner with us.

The application is only the beginning! There are background and credit checks; we make sure applicants have taken a first-time homebuyers course; a home visit is completed, then the lottery. Once selected, a Habitat partner family becomes an important part of the entire homebuilding process. They work alongside volunteers, participate in homeownership education, and complete 250 sweat equity hours as they prepare for the responsibilities that come with owning a home.

They aren’t simply receiving a home – They are helping build it.

What Is Sweat Equity?

“Sweat equity” is one of the most special parts of the Partner Family’s journey.

Future homeowners work alongside volunteers and Habitat staff, contributing their time and energy toward their future home and their community. These hours can take many forms and are an opportunity for the selected family to learn new skills, connect with the people helping build their home, and take an active role in their journey toward homeownership.

There is something incredibly powerful about watching a family physically contribute to the place they will eventually call home.

It Takes a Community to Build a Home

While a Habitat partner family is at the heart of the process, they aren’t building their home alone. It truly takes a community!

Local contractors and tradespeople donate their time and expertise. Businesses sponsor projects and provide materials. Volunteers show up with their time, energy, and willingness to learn. Donors help provide the resources necessary to keep projects moving forward.

And right now, our community is coming together to build a home in Norton.

At 14 Island Road, the first steps toward our newest Habitat home are officially underway. Thanks to our friends at Charron Tree Service, the property has already begun its transformation.

What’s currently an active construction site will eventually become a home. It will be a place where a local family will make memories, celebrate milestones, gather around the dinner table, and build their future.

The Beginning of a New Chapter

Our Partner Family Application for the Norton build is currently open through September 15, 2026. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about becoming a Habitat homeowner, we encourage you to explore the program and see if you may qualify.

And if homeownership isn’t your next step, there are still so many ways to be part of this story.

Volunteer. Sponsor. Donate. Connect us with a contractor or local business. Share our mission with someone who needs to hear it.
