The Positive Impacts of Stable Housing
One of the largest concerns in the United States is having stable housing. In many towns and cities in America, the annual income required for a median-priced household exceeds $150,000, which is almost double the national median income of $75,000. Affordable housing is needed in this country, and Habitat for Humanity strives to bring stable housing to our communities across the country. Stable housing brings numerous positive effects to families, communities, and overall health.
Overall Health
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified housing as an important factor of health and highlighted the link between where a person lives and their overall health. The CDC explained that people are at more of a risk when living in poorer conditions to develop health risks due to exposure to health hazards in their living space. The biggest threats are mold, lead, and toxic pollutants. While the CDC outlines the eight “Healthy Homes” guidelines for potential homeowners to look for when finding a place to live, many higher quality homes are not affordable. This lack of affordability causes potential homeowners to risk their health for a more affordable place to live.
When affordable and stable housing is provided, the cost of health care decreases due to the lower risk levels in the home. With more affordable housing that fits within the CDC’s guidelines to a healthy home, homeowners could live healthier lives and face fewer long-term health risks.
Family Life
Affordable homeownership is key to a healthy life and a positive upbringing for children. When homeowners are comfortable in their home, both financially and physically, individuals can invest in themselves through saving for their futures and attending educational opportunities that they may not have had access to. In a survey completed by Habitat International, 57% of families have more savings than before, allowing them to build security for their futures.
For children, having a safe home is necessary for their growth and development. Studies have shown that there is a straight line between the quality, location, and affordability of housing and a child’s ability to thrive. When a child is facing the hardships of their parents and the lack of housing stability, numerous behavioral and emotional problems develop. By providing stable housing for them and the parents, a child can focus on developing their futures instead of focusing on where they will end up.
Community
Affordable housing brings communities together. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, neighborhoods where families stay for longer periods of time tend to have lower crime rates. Through renovating properties and putting down roots, communities and networks of support arise. Having affordable housing can bring communities together and uplift one another.
Affordable housing can provide opportunities for lowering food insecurities and school mobility.
How Can We Continue Bringing Affordable Housing to Our Communities?
Establishing affordable and secure housing will not occur overnight. However, there are numerous avenues to raise awareness for this need across the country.
- Reach out to your local leaders and Senators for support.
- Invest in organizations, like Habitat for Humanity, to help their missions of building affordable housing.
- Donate time, money, or materials towards affordable housing builds.
